Who is Jesus and What is the Gospel?

This is my explanation of the Gospel, or good news, of Jesus Christ. Now, I am not a pastor or a biblical scholar or an evangelist. This page is simply an attempt to show you how I understand the Gospel in its basic form. No complicated liturgical arguments here…just a couple Bible verses and some simple explanations.

The Basics

I believe that God is the omnipotent creator of the universe (that means He makes the rules). He is holy, which means He is perfect, and can not tolerate anything that is not perfect in his presence. I believe that we are eternal and when we die, we go to one of two places – to be in God’s presence in Heaven for all eternity or to be removed from God’s presence for all eternity in Hell. For me, when I die, I want to be in His presence.

But there is a problem

As I mentioned, God can not tolerate anything imperfect in His presence. Unfortunately, the Bible tells us that

All have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God. Romans 3:23

Every one of us has sinned but what does it mean when we sin – what’s so bad about sin:

For the wages of sin is death… Romans 6:23a

Therein lies the problem – if everyone has sinned (you and I included) and the penalty for that sin is death, there is no way to get to Heaven. Since we all have sinned, we can not "earn" our way into Heaven. We desperately need a solution to this problem.

There is also a solution to this problem

This is the full version of the verse immediately above:

For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

You might have also heard this verse:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

That is the Gospel

Gospel means "good news" and the fact that a sinful person can have eternal life by trusting in God’s son Jesus is very good news.

What do you have to do to get eternal life?

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

So you can’t earn it, there is no "work" that you can do to deserve salvation. It is a free gift of God. God has provided the way, we just have to be humble and acknowledge that we have sinned against God and that we can’t do anything ourselves to earn our way back to His good graces.

It’s about a relationship, not religion

The end result of this process is not a bunch of rules that you have to follow or a list of things you now get to criticize other people about when they don’t do things correctly. Rather, it is a relationship with God the father and Jesus Christ the son.

Before I really understood the Gospel, I thought that Christianity just constituted a bunch of things to do and the thought of it was exhausting. But that is not what Christianity is really about. Being a Christ-follower doesn’t mean exhaustion, instead it means freedom . It gives me freedom to know that even if I mess up, I am covered by Jesus and will still get into heaven. I don’t have to be perfect or even good enough, I just have to be me. The old bumper sticker is true when it says that "Christians aren’t perfect – just forgiven."

Well, that’s my 2 minute explanation on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Like I said, I’m not preacher, I’m just trying to provide this information in an easy to understand manner. If you have any questions or want to discuss anything further, please don’t hesitate to drop me an email . If you have hard questions, that’s great too. And if you have really, really hard questions, I may have to get you in touch with a friend who knows a lot more answers than I do, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

God bless…
