Weekly Bible Verse – Leaving an Inheritance
A good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous. Proverbs 13:22 (NIV)
We find what I feel is quite a sobering message in the initial part of this verse – not only does a
“good” person take care of his/her family and provide his/her children an inheritance, but also should provide an inheritance to his/her grandchildren. Are you counting up dollars in your head as you think of this? You were worried about how you were going to afford your own retirement and now you’ve got to fund an inheritance for a bunch of others too? Well, don’t get too worried just yet.
Remember, there is more to life than just money. We actually discussed this verse in our Financial Peace University class recently and those were some of the initial sentiments expressed. But others mentioned that this doesn’t strictly mean a financial inheritance. Maybe it helps to think of it more as a legacy that you are leaving to your children and grandchildren. In fact, in another translation (Bible in Basic English – BBE) the word “heritage” is used instead of “inheritance.”
Think of it this way, it is awesome to leave a financial inheritance to your children and grandchildren. If you were able to help them get started in a business or go through college without saddling themselves with loads of debt, think of how much that would help get them moving in the right direction early in life. But if you must lie, cheat, and steal, or spend countless hours away from your family to do so, think of the real legacy you are leaving to them. Use any means necessary to get money? Or money is the most important thing in life even more so that God and family? That is certainly not the “heritage” you want to impart to your kids and grandkids, is it?
God bless and have a great week..
