Weekly Bible Verse – One View of a “Productive Life”

August 18, 2009 · Filed Under Weekly Bible Verse · Comments

Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”  John 6:27 (NIV)

I feel that this verse dovetails nicely with the previous BFN Weekly Bible Verse regarding living a productive life (to be specific, it was not living an unproductive life…details, details).  It might not be immediately apparent what was meant by the term “productive life” so I hope to shed a little bit of light on the subject with this week’s verse.  The previous verse speaks of devoting oneself to doing what is good so as to not live an unproductive life.  If it wasn’t crystal clear what “doing what is good” means or what living a productive life entails, today’s verse from John 6:27 illuminates it.

We should not be solely focusing on earthly things (”food that spoils”), rather we should be working for things that “endure to eternal life.”  To make this even clearer, take a look at the verse in the New Living Translation which reads “but don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you.”  So you want to know what to worry about?  You want to know where you should devote your time and energy?  Here it is right here: things that are eternal (and most importantly eternal life itself).

Stephanie left a very eloquent comment in response to the previous verse where she hoped that “people don’t use the excuse ‘I have to take care of my own issues first’ before helping others. If we trust God 100% we won’t have to worry about the basics.”  I absolutely agree with her and I feel that this verse from John 6:27 underscores her point.  I tell my kids all the time, “focus on what’s important” and that bit of advice applies here as well – what is important is…God.  Yes, you must take care of your family and yourself, but your main focus should be on eternity.

“Hey!” you say, “I thought this was a personal finance blog.”  My response: “Great, you noticed!”  Seriously, though, these verses apply directly to our finances.  You have probably heard it said that if you want to see what a person cares about, take a look at their check book (or credit card statement or online bank account…work with me here!).  So if you are focusing on what is important, your finances will reflect that.  You will be spending your money on more than just yourself.  You will be faithful in your giving to support your church and other ministries.  You will be generous to your family, your friends, and others around you.  Basically, you will use some of your money to glorify God and impact the world for His kingdom.  Hoarding and/or selfish spending will not accomplish that…generosity will.

God bless and have a great week…
