Weekly Bible Verse – The Love of Money

July 6, 2009 · Filed Under Weekly Bible Verse · Comments

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.  1 Timothy 6:10 (NIV)

I can not tell you how many times I have seen this verse misquoted as “money is the root of all evil.”  Please, read it again….it does not say that “money is a root of all evil” (well, ok, technically those words are there in that order but if that’s not cherry-picking phrases from the Bible, I don’t know what is!) it says the “love of money” is a root of all evil.

I don’t believe money in itself is good or evil – I believe it is a neutral, amoral entity.  I do wholeheartedly agree with the theory, however, that the love of money can lead people to do horrible, horrible things.  Certainly you would agree that the inner desire to acquire more money has caused some people to do awful things to other people over the years.

The second part of this verse brings up an often-overlooked problem with the love of money.  While stealing money, for example, hurts other people, the verse also talks of the internal consequences that those “eager for money” may experience – namely, wandering from their faith and causing themselves “many griefs.”  This is serious stuff if we’re talking about the desire for money adversely affecting your relationship with Christ!

Now, I know you need money to survive in our country in our current day and age.  Again, I’m not saying money is bad (I work hard to earn money and I like to save it up) but it is important to monitor how much you love money and what you would be willing to do get more money – both for concern for others around you and for yourself.  Check your motives, stay pure, and be careful out there.

God bless and have a great week…
