Weekly Bible Verse – Fiscally Rich but Spiritually Poor

June 1, 2009 · Filed Under Weekly Bible Verse · Comments

“You say, ‘I am rich, with everything I want; I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that spiritually you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.  Revelation 3:17

People tend to sometimes get confused between their spiritual needs and their material needs.  When those material needs are satisfied, the fact that a person even has spiritual needs sometimes flies out the window.  This week’s verse reminds us that spiritual and material needs are, in fact, two completely separate needs and they are not necessarily linked.

This is a common problem for a lot of people.  Time and time again in the Old Testament we see God’s people relying more and more on themselves and drifting away from God as they became materially blessed.  We are told in the New Testament that we can’t serve both God and money.   Even Jesus speaks of the difficulty for a wealthy person to enter into the kingdom of God.  These are but a few of the many examples of this common thread dispersed throughout the Bible.

What does this teach us then?  It informs that this is a real problem for most people and that it is a difficult thing with which to deal.  So, keep that in mind as you go through this week; try to shift your focus off of your financial status and onto your spiritual needs and blessings. Our fiscal concerns seem more immediate and therefore more pressing compared to our spiritual needs, but in the long run, those spiritual needs (especially for salvation) dwarf all other needs by comparison.  Just like I said in the previous Weekly Bible Verse – "all the money in the world won’t buy you immortality, you need to rely on God for that."

God Bless and have a great week…

This is so true. When I’m in deep trouble I usually turn to God and begged for help. But when I’m doing fine, I do my own thing and forgot who’s in charge.

Always give thanks to the Lord, no matter what the circumstance.
