Weekly Bible Verse – Check your Motivations

June 8, 2009 · Filed Under Weekly Bible Verse · Comments

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Galations 6:7-8 (NASB)

Recently, I find myself struggling with the very concept discussed in this week’s passage.  The message is to examine and be careful about your motivations in whatever you are doing.  I spend a fair amount of my time working on ways to diversify my income stream.  Though I don’t do it often enough, I am trying to continually remind myself that these efforts should not be aimed toward greed and creating wealth for my own selfish sake.

Personally, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with generating income – we all have needs whether it is to take care of ourselves, provide for our families, prepare for retirement, etc.  I think that we must be careful in our motivations for all of this, however.  Striving to become rich for the sake of telling everyone you are rich, I don’t really think that is a God-honoring motivation.  I think that falls under the warning given in the verse above – sowing out of our own selfish desires will lead to destruction.

We need to ensure our motivations are more pure than simple selfishness.  Sure, we work to take care of our needs, but if our goals are generating an abundance of wealth, our desires for that abundance should be more than to satisfy our own greed.  Rather, it should be to use for God’s kingdom – advancing the gospel, taking care of those in need, providing support for our church, our pastors, our missionaries, etc.

Hey, I didn’t say this was an easy thing to do – the world all around us is basically shoving the exact opposite message down our throats constantly.  Just because something is hard, however, does not mean it is not worthwhile.  In fact, usually the hardest things to do are the most rewarding.

God bless and have a great week…
