But I am surrounded by poverty and see people making great sacrifices to help others and it has made me a bit cynical about some of the things churches spend money on. The fact is that I am partially supported by our church and the donations people make to the church, for which I am very grateful. John,

I think the principles you laid out are right on. I follow the same practices you do in giving with one exception. I give a smaller percentage to my local church and a higher percentage directly to organizations and missionaries that I trust. I have heard that around 95% of Christian giving and outreach efforts are directed toward those who are already Christ followers or those who need it least. I try to do my small part to correct this imbalance. Two blocks from where I sit I can find people living in shacks, bathing in water that is mostly sewer, eating garbage etc. I would rather do something about that than help my church upgrade to the latest video projector or print 5 page full color bulletins every week that go in the trash right after the service, and so on.
