Back to School Tips For Starting the School Year – College Edition

August 15, 2008 · Filed Under Random · Comments

It’s that time of the year again! Everyone is gearing up to go back to school. It’s a very exciting year for most people – kids starting kindergarten, high school, college (and especially parents of teenagers, I think).

In honor of this special time, I’ve tried to collect some tips – especially for you students going back to college. Let’s start it off with some of my personal tips:

  1. Beware people carrying clipboards and bearing gifts – A common sight on most college campuses, you often see tables filled with "free" gifts. All you need to do to get the freebies is sign up for a credit card – a no-brainer, right? Actually, yes (but maybe not in the way you’re thinking). You probably don’t need a credit card (and you definitely don’t need more junk). If you really do need a credit card, find one that has no annual fee and gives cash back. Try searching Bible Money Matter’s credit card offers page or just do a search on "credit card rewards."
  2. If you do end up with a credit card, don’t use it frivolously – Remember, credit cards do not represent free money. You will have to pay back the money you spend with it. If you put too much on the card and can only afford to pay the minimum payment, you will be wasting a lot of money paying it back for a long, long time. My advice is not to go down that path.
  3. Save money when purchasing your textbooks – When I went to school, there was one off-campus bookstore. Nowadays you have a multitude of options for purchasing your textbooks and saving money. Instead of repeating information here, I suggest you check out these textbook purchasing tips from Spilling Buckets or Northern Cheapskate .
  4. Have fun – just do it inexpensively – Is there any other place that provides as many entertainment and cultural opportunities besides a college campus? There is so many things to do to pass your time (when you’re not studying, of course). Check out the library (bad pun), cheer your team on (try some sports you don’t usually watch), watch your classmates perform in a concert or a play or a musical, play intramural sports, get involved with some service projects, workout at the college gym, the list goes on and on.
  5. Go to Class – I was always amazed that this seemed like some big secret I discovered. I found that going to class (and paying attention!) made my classes so much easier!

Good luck this school year and God bless…

Thank you very much for the mention, we are glad the article made your cut. Great collection of ideas for new students, I particularly like your “Have fun – just do it inexpensively” idea, this is vital.

    thanks for the link!

If you’re gonna get credit card, make sure you pay it off every month, and that it has no annual fee. And if it has rewards – USE THEM! :)
